Our UniFi Dream Machine review still pulls more readers than almost anything on this site, and the follow up question lands in our inbox every week: fine, but which one? The base UDM we reviewed is getting hard to find new, and Ubiquiti now splits the rackmount line three ways. Heres how the UniFi Dream Machine Pro, the SE and the Pro Max actually shake out for a small office, with the pricing reality we see on Fort Myers installs baked in.
The short version
Most offices we wire around Fort Myers end up with the SE. Its built in PoE ports mean one less box in the rack, and that usually beats the price gap. The Pro makes sense when you already own a PoE switch thats pulling its weight. The Pro Max is for offices that outgrew both, more cameras, more throughput, and a second drive bay so your camera footage survives a dead disk.

UDM Pro: the workhorse
At $379 the Pro is the cheapest way into the rackmount UniFi world, and for a gigabit office its plenty. You get the full network controller, UniFi Protect for cameras, and the same 3.5 Gbps inspection engine as the SE. The catch is it powers nothing by itself. Every access point and camera needs PoE from somewhere else, so if you dont already own a PoE switch, add that cost before comparing.
UDM SE: the one we usually install
The SE takes the Pro and builds in what most small offices were going to buy anyway: eight PoE ports pushing 180 watts, a 2.5 GbE WAN port for the faster cable plans now common in Southwest Florida, and a 128 GB SSD that makes the Protect camera interface noticeably snappier. For a typical office with a handful of access points and cameras, the SE alone can be the entire network closet. Thats fewer failure points during storm season, which matters here more than spec sheets do.
UDM Pro Max: when you actually need it
The Pro Max doubles up where the others tap out, 5 Gbps through the security engine, room for 200+ UniFi devices, 8 GB of RAM and two drive bays you can mirror. If youre running a dozen 4K cameras, or your office moved to multi gig fiber, this is the honest pick. If youre not, youre paying $220 over the Pro for headroom youll never touch. We install these for medical offices with heavy camera coverage and not much else.
What about the original Dream Machine?
The tower style UDM we originally reviewed is end of the road, Ubiquiti has moved on and stock is drying up. If you own one its still fine for a small office, no urgency. But dont buy one new in 2026 when the Express and the Pro exist at either side of its old price.
